After months of research, I finally found the answer. I discovered the work of two medical doctors in the mid 1900s (work that is almost completely unknown in the US). These doctors lived on different continents (halfway around the world) and likely did not even know of each other’s work. But what they discovered forever changed my life.
What they discovered was that modern stress alters the way we breathe and starves the brain cells of oxygen. This causes the brain cells to rapid fire, which leads to a racing mind and triggers the stress response in the body. This leads to more stress and locks us in a viscous spiral. Fortunately, these doctors also discovered that if we can just revert our breathing back to normal, we can restore proper oxygen levels to the brain cells and reduce the effects of stress.
While the solution seemed too simple to me at the time, it was amazingly effective.
